MUN is an interdisciplinary and extracurricular activity that students across Secondary School choose to participate in. While they simulate a real United Nations convention in which they discuss contemporary environmental, economic, political, social and security issues, they develop skills such as public speaking, debating, research, writing resolutions and even impersonating a real delegate representing the position of a country towards a global issue. They also enhance the competencies of communication, collaboration, citizenship, critical thinking, character and creativity.
During the conference there are delegates representing each participating country and there are chairs/student officers in charge of leading the debate. Special protocols are respected for debating and speaking. Each delegate reads their speech/position paper regarding the issue being discussed in their forum/commission. Then, during lobbying time, delegates exchange ideas, form alliances and merge their draft resolutions so that during the real debate a final resolution to the issue being discussed is written respecting the UN protocols on how to write resolutions.
During 2021, the MUN Club was involved in several Models of the United Nations, most of them virtual given the circumstances, but in preparation for a 2022 full of challenges:
-Latin America Model United Nations (LAMUN) - April 2021 Delegation
-ESSARP Model United Nations (EMUN) - EMUN 2021 Delegation
-San Silvestre Model United Nations (SSMUN) - Sept 2021 - Delegation
-Saint Andrew's Scots School Model United Nations - Internal (SASSMUN) - Sept 2021
-Carmelitas Model United Nations (CARMUN) - Oct 2021- Organized by schools in Peru - Individual delegates
-Craighouse Model United Nations (CRAIGMUN) - Nov 2021 - International School in Chile - Our students were Student Officers / Chairs for the debate
-THIMUN (The Hague International Model of United Nations) THIMUN The Hague
We also congratulate Ignacio Granda (Y11) who has been selected by ESSARP together with other 17 students from schools in Buenos Aires to represent our school and Argentina in the Hague Model of United Nations occurring virtually during January 2022. Ignacio will be a delegate in a MUN conference with over 3200 students around the world representing the Rep. of Korea (South) discussing issues under the topic of “ONE PLANET ONE WORLD, debate, decide, act now”.
Finally, we are proud to share with you the experience of one of our MUN Club Lead Students, while organising SASS MUN. This was a student led activity, which helped our current MUN Club in incorporating around 20 new members, specially from Y7, 8 and 9, trained by our former MUN students.
It is clearly evident that MUN engages students in analytical work on global issues. The tasks they carry out during the days of the conference contribute to the integral formation of the participants since it helps them to develop skills such as oratory (Character), the capacity for analysis (Critical Thinking), the correct writing of formal texts such as resolutions (Communication), the art of negotiating with allies and adversaries (Collaboration & Character), the design of strategies and the search for cooperation (Creativity) and consensus to face great challenges. By living these types of experiences, they become global citizens (Citizenship), committed to various causes and determined to transform the realities with which they do not agree. In addition, they establish deep friendship relationships with young people from different backgrounds, socioeconomic conditions and cultures, which contributes to respect for diversity, peaceful coexistence and a culture of peace.
Here are some reflections written by the students after the Models they have participated in.
